Because the Economist has recently announced Singapore as one of the most expensive cities to live in the world, it doesn't mean that you should cross it out from your list, if you are running short of money. Following, there are my 6 tips on how to save some cash and enjoy Singapore at the same time.

1. Accommodation

Staying in a hotel in Singapore, might be a great yet expensive experience. If you are the kind of guy who says 'dorms are not for me' yet you want to avoid blowing up your budget in pricier accommodation, then think again. Staying in a hostel in a Singapore is a top choice. For about 15 Euros, you can get a clean and comfy bed including decent breakfast, close to all the main attractions of the city. You might also want to consider alternative types of accommodation like the Couch Surfing and the Airbnb.

2. Food

Eating Singapore's street food is one of the best ways to experience the delicious Asian cuisine, and keep your belly and wallet happy. The Singapore's street food is one of the safest and tastiest in the entire Southeast Asia. It is so good that even popular chefs around the world, like Gordon Ramsay, go crazy about it. Popular places to try it among others, is the China Town Food Court and the Arab Street. Oh! And the tap water is drinkable.

3. Nightlife

Every afternoon, the gorgeous bars around the streets, get full of well dressed people who have just finish their work at the office. The quality of the guests at the local bars, and the services provided make the night out a bit expensive for an average budget traveller. Just a glass of beer may cost as high as 10 dollars, and other alcoholic drinks, like wine and cocktails cost at least 12 to 25 dollars. So, it might be a bit expensive, but still the hope is not lost. Search around for bars with special offers. Happy hours may drop the price down to a half.

4. Transportation

If you are staying for a day or two, then probably is not worth it, but if you are planning to stay for longer, then definitely go for an EZ- link Card. Exploring Singapore just by walking around is not the best option, and renting a car or a scooter will not come cheap. The Singapore's public transit system is one of the best I have ever seen, and the best way to get around the city. The EZ-link Card, you can get it from any MRT Station or 7-Eleven. It will cost about 12 SGD (5 SGD the card and about 7 SGD for the top up) and allows you to use the all the public buses and trains. If you do not manage spent the entire top up credits, you can return the card back at the end of your visit and get a refund.

5. Shopping

Shopping in Singapore is very tempting. The large malls and shopping centers being literally everywhere, can break even the most frugal and stingy spirits. Instead of going shopping from the obvious large malls, get in the ones where the majority of the locals go, like the one in Bugis Street. You will be surprised from the variety in products and the difference in price. If you need souvenirs from Singapore, the streets of China Town are just for you.

6. Sightseeing

You may can't afford to enjoy popular attractions like the Universal Studios, the Night Safari, the Singapore Flyer etc., but there are so many other places and activities to enjoy around Singapore for free.

Walk around the solar supertrees on a late afternoon at the Gardens by the Bay, check out the arts society for public performances, visit Little India, get in the Sands Skypark Hotel and admire the beautiful architecture, wander at the National Gardens or pose with the Merlion. No matter what you will decide to do in Singapore, remember that you don't have to be rich to treat yourself with a glimpse of luxury.
