After month of being under lockdown, the tourism sector seems to be back on track. And as the people have started travelling, once again the hotel rooms are getting occupied. Fed up of being cooped inside, people are stepping out to explore the less crowded place. In short, the trend of 'Revenge Tourism' is on the rise. The term is used to describe a suppressed demand for travel after months of being under lockdown.

One reason that is attributed is that people want a break from their professional load and many other things, according to media reports.

After living together for several months, more and more Indians are travelling in revenge. But most of them are looking for places that are not on the peat track and are not crowded.

A spike in bookings

Airbnb has surpassed its 2019 gross booking levels in India in Q1 of 2021. Professionals in the hotel industry have also confirmed this trend. They said they have seen an increase in bookings in all areas – from luxury to budget – and in some places, 80% bookings were done on weekends and holidays. An ITC hotel executive said that in Bangalore and Hyderabad, ITC properties have attracted many business and leisure travellers, and the ITC Grand Chennai, which only reopened on September 1, has seen reasonable demand.

Another interesting trend that is noticeable at the moment is that people are opting for destinations that are within easy driving distance from their cities. Confirming this trend, Vikram Lalwani, Head of Sales, Revenue and Destination Business at Sterling Holiday Resorts said, "Six of our 40 hotels are places to visit from significant cities. And hence, we have seen a surge in traffic for these resorts."

Travellers are more keen to opt for a longer duration when it comes to vacationing than 2-3 days, as was the trend before lockdown.

Since, international travel is still not on the cards anytime soon, the domestic hotel industry is hoping that travellers would been keen on opting for more leisure packages or staycations. A large segment of the hotel industry is looking forward to Nov-December for a better recovery than the last 3-4 months.
