Kasar Devi, Uttarakhand: A Retreat Beyond the Ordinary

In a departure from my norm, the call to explore the undiscovered beckoned me to the serene realms of Kasar Devi in Uttarakhand. The urge of exploring hidden treasures, immersing in diverse cultures, and relishing myself into indigenous flavors became the driving force behind this unconventional escapade.

Shunning the well-worn tourist paths, my journey led to Kasar Devi, a revered temple nestled amidst the tranquil Almora district. Perched atop the Van Allen Belt, this sacred enclave emanates a cosmic energy akin to revered global landmarks like Stonehenge and Machu Picchu.

My sojourn commenced from Rishikesh, a peaceful town. A bus voyage to Haridwar followed by a train expedition to Kathgodam, the gateway to this adventure —the nearest railway station—marked the initial steps of this exploration. Arriving at Kathgodam in the early hours, a brief respite at the railway station preceded a shared cab ride to Almora as the dawn broke, you can easily catch a bus from Haldwani or Kathgodam to Almora. The journey unfolded amidst a captivating sunrise, painting the sky in an indescribable palette of colors.

Anticipating a rustic village, Almora unveiled a vibrant ambiance—a blend of small-town charm and modern amenities. Opting for a 10-kilometer trek to Kasar Devi, I reveled in the untouched beauty that enveloped every step of the way.

At The Hosteller, Kasar Devi, an abode nestled within this offbeat locale, I found solace among a handful of fellow travelers. Explorations led to delightful culinary experiences at Rainbow Cafe,I crossed paths with fellow travelers embarking on a global adventure, marking their visit to the country as their 16th stop on their worldwide expedition. Uno sessions with newfound friends added an unexpected charm to the day.

Despite my usual reservations about religious sites, the magnetic pull of Kasar Devi captivated me. Surrendering to the moment, I found myself immersed in a serene meditation for an unprecedented 4 hours, untouched by distractions.

As dusk approached, tales of jungle perils after dark guided a retreat back to the hostel. Evening ended at a nearby café with flavorful dishes and the comforting warmth of hot chocolate, culminating in a communal dining experience with a local thali—an ideal conclusion to an enriching day.

Dawn marked a farewell to Kasar Devi as I prepared for another uncharted destination—Naukuchiatal. Reflecting on the tranquil embrace of Kasar Devi, it stands as a serene haven amidst Uttarakhand's vibrant landscape—a sanctuary worth cherishing and recommending to fellow seekers of the offbeat.
