Kasar Devi is a small village near Almora, Uttarakhand, situated at an altitude of 2000+ meters. This place offers some tranquilizing views of the Himalayas.
Kasar Devi is known for the temple, which dates back to the 2nd century CE. Nearby the temple, you will find a cave, which is believed to be the meditation center of the great Swami Vivekananda. If you closely look at the rocks, you will find ancient devnagari carvings.
The hilltop offers surreal forest views. If you are a nature lover, this place is for meant for you!
I was looking for a volunteering opportunity in Kasar and a friend of mine recommended Ram Singh Mehra Homestay to me. This property happens to be the oldest homestay that was started in Kasar Devi. From setting up the first homestay back in 1970s to setting up the first PCO in 1997, the Mehra family carries a huge legacy. Not at all surprising why the property finds a mention in some of the famous books, alongwith the postcard of Uttarakhand tourism.
Ram Singh Mehra Homestay proved to be a second home for me. Everybody is so humble and good to interact with. Surrounded with a plethora of trees all around, the property has ample of greenery to offer. You get to eat mulberries (sehtoot) and kaafal right out of the farm. If you are into organic farming, you have ample of opportunities and space to put that into practice here. If you are a dog lover, Jackie and Jerry won't disappoint you :)
I came to the Mehra Homestay as an art volunteer and now, I have become so involved with the family that most of the travelers assume that I'm a part of this family. Happy to be a part of this family's legacy. If you are in Uttarakhand or nearby, do visit this property. The family's hospitality won't let you leave this place and the beautiful views of the nature would be a bonus.
