A picturesque coastal delight, with backwaters, lagoons, canals, and beaches - Alleppey or Alappuzha is a picture-perfect place for spending a quality weekend. Here are a few things you can add to your itinerary when planning to visit this palm-fringed-lake-housing town.
Stay
From houseboats, backwater hotels to city stays, Alappuzha offers a variety of accommodation spots for you to choose from. We stayed at the beautiful
They have recently renovated the place, and it looks amazing. The only downside is that you'll have to park your vehicle and take a buggy (which they provide) to get to your rooms. This can be a slight inconvenient at odd hours. They have so many amenities, including a complimentary backwater tour that one can stay an entire day at the resort itself.
Commute
Although there is public transport in the city but I'd recommend getting your own vehicle or hiring a cab for maximum flexibility. We took a self-drive rental from Kochi and drove to Alappuzha.

Places to visit
Beaches
Expensive sand beach with a lighthouse, old and rusty pier that extends into the sea, you ask? Alappuzha Beach is the answer.
Another beautiful beach to witness sunsets at is Marari Beach.
Vembanad Lake
Hop on a private boat to the middle of the longest lake of India, have a boat-picnic and watch the sun set behind the palm trees. You start with a stream that empties into a vast stretch of the main lake. The boats are equipped with speakers so you can party in the middle of nowhere. You can also take the wheel of the boat and answer the calling of the 'Sindbad- the sailor' inside you
Cost- INR 1600/- for a 2-hour trip for 4 people
Canoe Experience in the Backwaters
You can book an early morning canoe experience to stroll the backwaters of Alappuzha on a paddleboat. If it rains in the middle, it's an even better experience. There will be a local paddler onboard so you can relax and soak in the beauty that surrounds you.
We booked ours from Oscar Cruise.

Food
Although there are a bunch of spots to eat, there are 2 that stood out for us. Alappuzha is a non-vegetarians' paradise, but these spots have delectable vegetarian options as well.
Although their entire menu is great but their smoked butter chicken is a must try!
I hope this article provided you some insights and helped in planning your next weekend getaway. If you have already visited Alappuzha and know some hidden spots, do mention them in the comments section and share them with the community. Happy Travelling.
