The capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur, offers an insight into India's royal heritage. The bustling and bumbling city brings together a unique mix of the old and the new that attracts thousands of visitors each year. In recent years, attempts have been made by the state government to boost Jaipur tourism and one visit to the city will be enough to show you that these efforts have worked. Jaipur’s handicrafts, jewellery, and designs will turn you into a shopaholic on the spot and its interesting mix of savouries and sweets, from Kachoris to Ghewar, will transform you into a foodie. Amidst all of this, stand the eye-catching sandstone monuments that promise a trip into history, the Amber Fort being the fairest of them all.
We've put together the perfect Jaipur itinerary for you, which will take you through the city's iconic monuments, after you've had your fill of the markets and eateries.
Getting to Jaipur and Around
Jaipur is well connected to all the major cities via air and rail route. Jaipur International Airport is located about 7-10 kms away from the main city. Jaipur is easily accessible by Rajasthan tourism's inter-city buses as well. Taxis are available on hire from Jaipur and hiring them on a daily basis is a viable option to move to and fro with ease when in the city
There is nothing better than starting your day with the beautiful views of sunrise over the Amer Fort. Not known to many people, the best spot for sunrise viewing is just in front of Amer Fort, across the road. You need to hike up around 300 stairs to get to the top. There are not many tourists here hence it provides an excellent photo opportunity. Start your hike around 5:00/ 5:30 am so that you are up by 6:00 or 6:30 am.
Amer fort opens at 8:00 am so you can come right here after taking your sunrise shots. Amer/Amber fort is UNESCO World Heritage site. Its a majestic palace where I can actually spend an entire day.
Panna Meena ka Kund
Near Amer fort is another insta famous spot called Panna Meena ka kunḍ. Its a huge symmetric step well. Walking on the staircase is prohibited as its really old and might collapse if lot of tourists will walk on these ancient steps. However, you can try to get your way by requesting the guard on duty.
If you love architecture, colours and art you are gonna love this palace. It open at 9:30 am, so reach early to beat the crowds. Most photogenic spots here include 4 gates that symbolises four seasons and four Gods, Diwan I Aam and Chandra Mahal.
Chandra Mahal has an additional fee of 2500 rs and provide you ample of photo opps. I did not do it however if you have time and money you can surely visit it.
Constructed out of red and pink sandstone, Hawa Mahal is a unique example of Rajputana architecture that sits on the edge of the City Palace. Constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, the palace has been built akin to the honeycomb of a beehive. It uses jharokhas or windows that let air circulate throughout the palace all through the day, keeping it cool and airy even during peak summers. One of Jaipur's main attractions, it is situated close to the City Palace and visiting this marvel is one of the most sought-after things to do in Jaipur.
Entry fee: ₹50 per person
Timings: 9am to 5pm
Tip: The prime entry for Hawa Mahal has been closed and it is now only accessible from a small alleyway around the back. There are no official signboards to guide you, so you will have to rely on help from locals in the marketplace.
This place is perfect symphony of colors. It's like a multicolor pastel palette. Also, there is not much crowd here so you can conveniently take your pictures.
If you are wondering where to get that perfect picture with those flying pigeons without using Photoshop, this is the place for you. You can click either in front of the museum or outside the complex.
One of a rare find, royal gaitor or Gaitor ki Chhatriyan, is the place where pre wedding shoots are done. Best place to capture some sunset shots. Royal Gaitor is actually a place for tombs for many Maharajas. The architechture of this place is breathtaking like most of the other attractions in Jaipur.
Another amazing place to catch up the sunset and have best aerial views of the city. Try to reach at least half an hour earlier before sunset
Time as it is, is of immeasurable value, and what better way to go back in time than to contemplate and try to comprehend the complex aesthetics of art, architecture and ancient science at play at the Jantar Mantar, which houses the 18th century “Vrihat Samrat Yantra” sundial, largest in the world, along with 18 other astronomical instruments, the functions of which are sure to perplex yet amaze the beholder.
This is complex of Hindu temples just 10kms from Jaipur. What makes this temple unique is that it is centered around a natural spring which has been channelized to fill seven large pools. These pools invite numerous monkeys which come here to quench their thirst. You can hike to the vantage point to watch sunset.
