Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a two and half hour laid back car ride from Guwahati. it is famous for its proximity to Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, the two wettest places on earth. And as they're all in a state whose name translates to "Abode of Clouds", it's not a surprise. I got a chance to visit this place in June 2014 with my family, and we spent 3 full day exploring Shillong and other nearby places. Though there is a lot to see in Shillong, I think that one should definitely keep aside a day to just relax and meander in the town. The greenery and the pleasant climate are excellent to just sit back and unwind.
Day 1 was spent taking in the sights of the city of Shillong. We visited museums, waterfalls, churches and more. Day 2 was for outstation places like Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong. This was a really rainy day and so we couldn’t get a lot of pictures though. The pictures here have been clicked by a friend who visited these places around the same time. Day 3 was our day of relaxation, along with some shopping. The market is also pretty good, and the bamboo and jute products are worthwhile buys.
This was the first place we visited in Shillong, and it was beautiful. The view point shows a vista of the whole town of Shillong
The cleanest village in Asia is something that gives everyone an example of how cleanliness isn't tough to achieve, it just takes a little effort from all of us.
This is something that should definitely not be missed, no matter what. As I went further along the path to the bridge, I felt like I was entering a fairy-tale land. This place is nothing short of magical.
The cave system here is experience that adventurists should not miss. The cave, with its numerous stalagmites and stalactites is an exciting experience. Though I must warn to be super cautious about your head!
This was one spot I'm extremely sad I couldn't photograph. The falls are breathtakingly beautiful, and are to be seen to be believed.
