I knew a little about the Brahma Kumaris since my childhood because one of my teacher was associated with it. It was way back, when I was in class 9th or Xth. I remember the teacher was known by his nickname Om Shanti. I still do not remember his real name. The imprints of his personality, his sketch of white shirt trouser of khadi and glasses of heavy frames still vividly formed. Later, I always felt facination of white dress code for men and women of Brahma Kumaris, their soft-spoken attitude and simplicity.
I got the opportunity to visit the ashram of Brahma Kumaris by their local office which extended the invitation of a four-days long workshop on the topic of "Value-Based Media for Healthy and Happy Society", and I readily agreed.
Since the train originates from Agra Fort Railway Station only, so no problem was faced in securing confirmation of seats. I got two tickets- one for me and the other for my wife. The train started at 10.15 PM, the scheduled time. Our seats were lower berts, but the family sitting in our cabin, alongwith kids had middle and upper berths. The lady requested for a change of the seat, and i exchanged the middle berth in lieu of my lower berth. No problem, since it was also comfortable. I plugged my charger into the switch and browsed some important mails, messages etc. Ultimately, I felt sleepy. It was already 11.45 PM and everyone around seems to be cozy in their bedding.
When I woke up, it was about 6.40 AM. The passengers were moving here and there for fresh up, some vendors of tea and coffee arrives in with their readymade tea and coffee. The couple told me that the train will reach at 9.20 AM at Abu Road station. They also enlightened me that the train had passed through Jaipur and Ajmer in the night and wee hours of the journey. I did not know that the route will include a travel through Jaipur and Ajmer, or that Ahmedabad is not far away from Abu Road, it is about 140 kms or so more.
The train reached at Abu Road railway station at 9.45 AM. We de-boarded the train and came outside the railway station where few people with white attire were standing near the vehicles of Ashram. I introduced them; one of them took my luggage and kept it inside the boot space of the bus. We entered in the bus and occupied the seats. In a few minutes, more delegates joins and the bus started to the Ashram.
It reached an imposing, grand, yet serene and beautifully looking campus Shantivan in about 15 minutes drive, and covering a distance of almost six kilometer through the city. Shantivan—the campus of Brahma Kumaris Ashram is a part of the different campuses of the Ashram, which are spread in Abu Road, and Mount Abu—the hilly terrain, about 30 kms away. The magnificient complex Shantivan- the forest of peace, is used for hosting various spiritual-cum-educational retreat programmes. Situated on a beautiful 50 acre landsite, at the foothills of Mount Abu, it combines the graceful charm of a well laid out setup with freshness of nature and lovely backdrop of hills.
Arrival and Accomodation:
The in-charge of Brahma Kumaris Agra branch, known by the name of Amar Bhai was very humble when he took our baggage, arranged a car for us, put the baggage in the boot space of the car, and handed over a computer-generated slip which mentioned that we have been allotted suite number 708 of Diamond House. It was about half a kilometer away from the entrance. The person manning reception requested us to fill up the columns in a register and handed over the keys of the accommodation. He also sent an accomplice to take care of our luggage. The nicely furnished, one-bedroom with attached toilet accommodation was situated on second floor. It had an almirah-cum-wardrobe, a table, a chair, two single beds with side racks, a fan tubelight, two bulbs with a night lamp, a cooler, with filled-up water, and provision to infuse more water directly from the tap, a balcony which offers beautiful view of hills spread all over and the grandiose view of the campus from the other side.
There were no telephones or intercoms in the rooms. The intercoms were available at the reception and other common areas, throughout the campus. There were provisions of water coolers with glasses, ironing board with electric irons on every floor. We were feeling urge to sip a cup of hot tea. I went downstairs via the lift and inquired from the reception. The person indicated me that there was a pantry room on the ground floor itself and you could avail the services of the pantry by yourself. It sounds interesting. I located the pantry which was furnished with a three-burner LPG stove, a two-door 365 liter refrigerator, modular almirahs where utensils for preparing tea and coffee, boiling milk and crockery as well as crockery was available in sufficient quantity. Sugar, Tea, Coffee and some spices which are needed for day to day use were also available there. Everything was properly labeled. The milkpot was available in the refrigerator with ample quantity.
It was a nice and pleasant experience. I prepared two cup of tea, in full milk, poured into the cups and took the cups in a serving tray to second floor to serve it to my wife who also liked it the way they have offered the services of the pantry to the inmates. There was a condition: You will require cleaning up your cups and the utensils after use! It was a logical and quite a normal condition. I enjoyed the pantry service of the Ashram, till the last days of our stay. I also discover, you yourself can take clean bedsheets, blankets, towels or other item which were available in an almirah, earned for these items only.
The Days of Conference:
The first day was limited to make yourself acquainted with the Ashram. We were introduced to the role of spirituality and rajyoga meditation in everyday life. Who am I?, was the theme of a video film where delegates were made to aware with their inner self. It is said that to know your soul, is the necessity of yourself. If you know yourself better, you can do anything with a new vision and better perspective.
The Shantivan complex of the Ashram, which was established in the year 1996, has a magnificient 20,000 seats pillerless auditorium, known as Diamond Jubilee Hall. The campus has large dining facilities, and serves 16,000 people at a times, usually. It has a training centre with five halls of varying capacities. A lotus shaped meditation room and Prakash Stambh adds to the beauty of the area.

The food which is not regarded as healthy like fried stuffs, aerated drinks and other such foodstuffs which is called junk food is totally prohibited in the campus.
The dining halls are not attached with the guest houses. There is one huge complex which serves as the cooking place cum dining center. The ground floor is used for cooking purpose and the rest three floors are utilized for serving food to the inmates. The timings for breakfast are: 8 to 9 AM. Departure: Towards a Transforming Life
Ultimately, the day of 15th of September came. We prepared to say goodbye to the transforming time which we spent in the Ashram. The serene environment, soft and smiling attitude of everyone, positive thinking behavior coupled with exercises of meditation and lots to learn—everything leads to a transformation: a change for betterment and healthy life. Thanks Brahma Kumaris for providing us opportunity.
Before parting our ways, I did not forget to buy audio CDs of devotional songs, few Video DVDs of the Rajyoga Meditation and important discourses by the practitioners of Brahma Kumaris Ashram. These are reasonably priced from Rs. 20 to 50 only. A number of souvenirs like key rings, pens, bags, paperweight etc were also available there with only a token price tag attached.
Our experience was that their teachings focus on development of human potential, bringing harmony into human relationships and changing the attitudes and outlook of people to promote the spirit of brotherhood, love and co-operation, irrespective of the field of operation.
And the journey, of rejuvenation, from Abu Road campus of Shantivan, towards railway station to board the train to Agra begins at 8.00 PM. Amar Bhai arranged a vehicle for us. Bharat Bhushan, his accomplice met us at the platform who came along with packets of dinner which we had skipped fearing delay in reaching station.
And we are back with lots of good memories, a new beginning ahead with lots to explore to connect to our self with the Supreme Power
(Since most of the expenses of our stay were incurred by the Ashram, including travelling, food, stay and other, we had literally no expenditure to our account. The total cost is approximate value only.)

Agra Fort is the oldest railway station of the Mughal town. It connects the city to Jaipur, Ajmer, Bharatpur and towards Lucknow and beyond on the opposite direction. Since we had to board the train to Abu road from Agra For station, we reached there sharp at 10.00 PM. The train originates from the station itself and so we located our seats in B-1 coach and thus boarded the train.
